2012 Honda Civic - Civic Si - Civic Hybrid

2012 Honda Civic - Civic Si - Civic Hybrid

What it is: The ninth generation of Honda’s compact Civic.

Why it matters: The Civic continues to combine thrifty operation, durability, innovation, value, and driving dynamics.

Platform: Highlights of the redesigned unibody chassis include greater rigidity, improved crashworthiness, and reduced interior noise.

Powertrain: Look for another evolution of  Honda’s small-displacement i-VTEC four-cylinder engine family, mated to a six-speed manual or a new six-speed automatic. The hotter Si version will return with a small bump in output from the current 197 horses, and mpg ratings should edge upward across the board. The hybrid version trades its Ni-MH batteries for lithium ion, and the natural-gas GX will be available in all 50 states for the first time.

Competition: Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda 3, Scion tC, Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Jetta.

What might go wrong: Material quality in some previous-gen Civics has suffered as a result of cost cutting. The performance of Si models may continue to lag behind the turbocharged Mazdaspeed 3, the VW GTI, and the Ford Focus ST.

Estimated arrival and price: Due this spring. Pricing should start at $17,000 and soar to $27,000 for a loaded Si.
